RNAS Culdrose’s 824 Naval Air Squadron now has a new commanding officer – pictured is the former CO Cdr Chris Jones handing over command to Cdr Alex Kelley, who then went on to address the assembled men and women of the Merlin helicopter squadron.

Cdr Kelley joined the Royal Navy in 2005 and trained as an observer on the Merlin Mk1 before later converting to Mk2, the current aircraft. As a former instructor and senior observer at 824 NAS, Cdr Kelley is also more than familiar with the squadron, which provides training for helicopter aircrew and air engineers as well as a frontline role protecting UK waters.

During on the coronation of King Charles last year, Cdr Kelley commanded the Guard of Honour during the parade in London. She also manages HMS Oardacious Valkyries, the first all-female military team attempting to row the Atlantic Ocean.
