Sub Lieutenant Roger Barton YOUNG RN
Died 6th September 2017
Roger was a Pilot in the FAA from 1948 – 1955. He flew tiger Moths, Harvards and Fireflies.
On the 27th January 1951, while flying from HMS Theseus in Korea with 810 Squadron, Roger espied what he thought were Submarines, duly dropped his depth charges, but later saw that they were whales quietly floundering along! (See “With the Carriers in Korea 1950 – 1953”, pages 81 and 90.) He final flew with 796 Squadron from HMS Seahawk.
He was Staff Officer on 736 Squadron from HMS Fulmar and became an ATCO at HMS Peregrine, Gannet and Heron until his completion of 12 years’ service in 1960.
Following his Naval career (which is on disc at the Imperial War Museum), Roger was an ATCO1 at the London Air Traffic Control Centre for 26 years. On retirement he became a Part Time Lecturer at Bailbrook College, Bath, training Air Traffic Controllers.
His main hobby was Golf. He served on many Committees of Henley Golf Club (Oxfordshire) and was Club Captain in 1991.
