On 29 October 1952, 848 NAS reforms at Gosport , equipped with 10 American Sikorsky S-55 Whirlwind helicopters for anti-terrorist duties in Malaya. The squadron embarked HMS Perseus for passage to Sembawang via Singapore and operated from an advanced base at Kuala Lumpur. For their role, the squadron was awarded the Boyd trophy in 1953, awarded annually to the aircrew who achieve the finest feats of aviation in that year.
