‘Tony went to Dartmouth as a Special Entry in May 1953 (the Coronation Term), and in September joined the Darts in the light fleet carrier Triumph in her first commission as the Cadet Training Ship. Of that 83-strong cohort, Ted Cottle, Geoff Courtis, Mike Durrant, Alan Goodenough, Michael Ryan, Chris Seal, Mike Schanche, Simon Thomas and Mike Styles qualified as pilots, but Tony became the only observer. He was a talented pianist, and as an Acting Sub at Greenwich made an important contribution to the performance of the Sub Show musical Maverick.
He served in 849 Squadron (AEW Gannets) based at Brawdy and embarked in Victorious. [I believe he later flew in Phantoms at Yeovilton, but I’m not sure.]
He retired to live in Alicante, where his house was on the Greenwich meridian.
The attached photograh was taken at a term reunion at the Union Jack Club in October 2009, 18 months before he died of cancer on 16 April 2011.
