There’s a change of the command team at RNAS Culdrose today – congratulations go to Commander Richard ‘Richie’ Turrell (right), who has come up through the ranks to assume the role of second-in-command of the air station.

He is pictured with Cdr Al Woodward (left) accepting the role of RNAS Culdrose executive officer.

Cdr Turrell said he was “honoured and delighted”. He joined the Royal Navy in 1992 as a trainee naval airman aircraft handler. After commissioning as an officer in 2010, he has served as flight deck officer of HMS Queen Elizabeth and recently commanded RNAS Culdrose’s 1700 Naval Air Squadron.

Cdr Woodward, a helicopter pilot, is stepping sideways to take temporary command of Merlin Helicopter Force, in the role known as Commander Merlin. Cdr Woodward is due to assume command of 820 Naval Air Squadron next year.
